How to

prepare for

your NY road test

STEP 1: Prepare for your road test

Before you take your road test, you will need to prepare by

  • Passing the written permit test and getting your New York State Learner Permit

  • Completing a 5- hour course Pre-licensing Course or a high school or college Driver Education Course

  • Reviewing the New York State Driver's Manuel (MV-21)

  • Get plenty of supervised driving practice while following all leaner permit rules about where and when you can drive.

  • Read through the Guidelines for Testing Drivers in Vehicles with Advanced Assistance Systems (ADAS) if applicable.

Important: Practice driving is not permitted at any New York State road test sites.

STEP 2: Schedule a Test

Road Test Scheduling Rules

  • If you're under 18 years old, you must wait a minimum of 6 months after getting your learner permit before you can schedule a road test.

  • The road test scheduling system will show the earliest available test dates and times based on the ZIP code you enter.

  • Waiting lists are not available.

  • Tests are mostly held on weekdays - Saturday testing is only offered occasionally.

    • You're not required to book your test in the country or region where you live - you can test anywhere in New York State.

    • You can check road test locations online before scheduling.

STEP 3: Take the Road Test
